The amount of information that can be retrieved with the birth records is amazing. For people conducting genealogy research, it can sometimes be frustrating when they are unable to find the information they are looking for.  Birth records help genealogy research in a way that nothing else can.  They contain the information that can come in handy in furthering the research.  They give the links that are needed to a person’s background, such as finding the parents’ details.

Birth records contain the birth certificate of an individual, which contain the person’s full name, the date of birth, time of birth, parents’ name, their addresses, occupations and several other details.  You may also find their social security numbers. Imagine how such information can lead a genealogy research in the right direction.

For us, birth records are part and parcel of our lives and we assume that it is only natural that every person has a birth certificate and other records related to the birth  However, this was not so in the past.  In the very early years, there was no record of the person’s birth, later they started noting them down using a pen in books.  At this stage, the information available in the records is not standard and some records may not contain much information.  The reason being, in those days, the town clerks, priests, doctors and such people were asked to complete the documents.  Hence, the information they contained was not standard and also they were stored in different places.  They were also not kept securely and it was seen the common disasters often wiped out these records.  Suppose there was a fire where they were stored, they would be lost forever as the buildings were not protected.

This is the reason, many people conducting genealogy research often do not find all the old records.  If for some reason, the records of an older generation family member were not found, you will have to look for other public records, where you may find the information you need.  There are the baptism records that contain almost the same information and school records where most of the information exists.

But when looking for birth information belonging to the more recent times, you will have to be armed with some information.  In small towns, it is considered to be illegal to give away birth information to people who do not know the key information; however,  in most other places, you will need this basic information to be able to retrieve it from among hundreds and thousands of records.

Before venturing on the search of a birth certificate, it is important to know the person’s complete name and the year of birth.

People who are conducting a genealogy research should try and get as many birth records of their family as possible, these can provide the links they are looking for and help them in finishing their genealogy research successfully.
